Storm, flood warning issued for Pärnu
A storm bearing down on the islands today has the potential to produce some flooding in the city of Pärnu, the National Weather Service said.
It is the second storm system expected to pack gusts of 110 kph in the few weeks. Unlike the last one, this one will be a rain-only event with temperatures of 1-6 C.
On the western islands and the coast, winds will first increase to 65 kph in the morning, 90 kph by afternoon and then over 100 kph in the evening and on into the night. The Gulf of Finland will see peak gusts of 95 kph. The rest of the country and inland areas will see gusts of 55 kph in the day, increasing to 72 kph after the sun goes down. Storm conditions will persist into the night.
Winds will be from the southwest, which is the scenario that produces the most storm surge in Pärnu, at the northeast end of a bay. The city experienced some of its worst flooding 10 years ago, when water was nearly 3 meters over average during a storm named Gudrun. Today's storm is forecasted to cause only a 1.5 meter surge.
