Environment Minister Keit Pentus-Rosimannus said the state is ready to pump 5 million euros into cleaning up the smelly air from excess seaweed buildup in part of the Pirita waterfront.

Finnish experience in similar operations could benefit Estonia, and the topic was discussed at a meeting of the countries' environment ministers in Helsinki on Thursday.

“Seaside areas of Helsinki no longer have such problems as we do near the Russalka statue and Merivälja area (in east Tallinn), where mineral-rich runoff flows into a bay with slow renewing water, causing problems,” she said, adding that rain water is diverted deeper into the see in Helsinki.

The Marine Systems Institute came to a similar conclusion after a study at the beginning of July.
