This Week's Weather: Mid-Week Thaw and Mixed Bag

The coming few days are expected to bring a sampler of conditions, varying from clear and cold to wet and windy.

The snowfall seen on Monday should ease up in the evening as a high-pressure system over Estonia sends the clouds packing and the mercury plummeting, according to the Meteorology and Hydrology Institute. Temperatures overnight should mostly range from -12 to -5 C, but could drop to as low as -15 C in places where the skies remain clear for longer periods.

On Tuesday, a new low pressure trough moving across the Baltic Sea is expected to kick up the wind, which could gust over 40 kph inland and 60 kph on the coasts. Snow and sleet will start falling on the islands and hit the western mainland by midday. By evening, the precipitation should reach the eastern border as well, by which time the warming temperatures in the west mean that, in those areas, it should come down as rain. Central and eastern Estonia are expected to see daytime temperatures of -6 to -1 C, but on the west side, the mercury should stay between 0 and +3 C.

The widespread precipitation should end in the early hours of Wednesday morning, but the varying temperatures spell a risk of ice on the roads and conditions could be made even worse by fog. Temperatures during the day are expected to be +1 to +5 C, with no significant drop overnight.

A new active low-pressure system on Thursday should send the wind speeds upward once again, this time to 45 kph inland and 70 kph on the coasts. Temperatures should remain as they were on Wednesday.

A bit of rain and sleet may still be falling here and there on Friday, but strong winds and a return of cold air will likely be the most notable conditions. Air temperatures are once again slated to range from +1 to +5 C for most of the day, but should cross into the freezing zone at night, when they will range from -7 to -2 C.
