The government surveying ship responsible for a spill of 1,400 liters of diesel into Lake Peipus yesterday suffered hull damage, according to uudised.err.ee.

The catamaran-type vessel suffered a puncture one of its two fuel tanks. Efforts were initiated to pump the remaining fuel into the intact tank.

Rescuers received word at 11:05 on Tuesday morning regarding the Maritime Administration vessel, 5 kilometers from shore at Omedu, uudised.err.ee reported.

After the news broke, the Police and Border Guard launched monitoring flights. An interagency staff consisting of Maritime Administration, Rescue Board and Environmental Board officials was assembled. Officials at the Mustvee border guard station have installed two absorbent booms between the shore and the spill.

The spill was 90,000 square meters in area as of Wednesday morning.
