Red flags are flying over Tartu's river beaches, signalling bacterial readings over what is considered allowable.

The situation in Anne canal, which is often considered less than pristine, is better, and that favorite warm-water bathing area is open.

The readings at the Emajõgi city swimming area and another river beach in the city were 158 and 167 colony-forming units per milliliter, not far above the allowable limit of 100 CFU/ml, but the lifeguards and security service provider hoisted the banners just to be safe.

The next batch of samples will be taken on August 11.
