Environmental Inspectorate, Police Find Dozens of Fishing Violations
A joint raid carried out Wednesday by the Environmental Inspectorate and the Police and Border Guard Board on fishing boats on Pärnu Bay found that many were using illegal gear.
The seven-boat inspection fleet checked 277 fishing devices, confiscating a dozen illegal nets of unknown origin and identifying other 14 violations of the Fishing Act.
Enn Keeman, the head of the inspectorate's fisheries department, told ETV on Wednesday that the prohibited gear included fish traps and larger fishing instruments, and that many minor violations were also found.
The two government offices carry out smaller joint inspections regularly, but large raids, like this one, are organized only a couple of times per year.
