The Weekend's Weather: Monotonous Cold Sticks Around

Those who, encouraged by the warm December, hoped for a quick and painless winter will not want to continue reading, as temperatures are expected to stay in the -10 to -15 C zone through the weekend and the foreseeable future.

If the good people at the Meteorology and Hydrology Institute are correct, Friday night should be celebrated by takeaway and board games, as temperatures in central areas could hit the -26 C mark.

For a change from previous nights, the south and southeast will not be as cold, staying "warmer" than -20 C. That comes after the country's southeasternmost weather station reported a winter-low of -27.3 on Thursday morning and temperatures in places like Värska only broke above -20 C for a few hours each day for the past week.

Saturday should be partially sunny, with temperatures hovering slightly below the -10 level, dropping to between -15 and -20 C at night as a high-pressure area continues to dominate over the nation.

The predictions of a one to two degree increase in temperatures on Sunday will not mean that snowfall will return, although the sun may come out once more.

If predictions are correct, the weekend's weather report can be copy pasted for the entire new week, until snow moves in next Thursday. But there is also a fair chance of more "sea effect" snow such as the unforecasted 5-6 cm that fell in Tallinn and the north coast during the day on Wednesday.
