This Week's Weather: Autumn Comes Early
The last five days of what is officially summer are slated to be anything but summer-like, with grey skies, wind and rain all on the menu.
A low pressure zone over the Baltic Sea is threatening to bring showers to the islands on Monday night and Tuesday morning. As the day goes on, the western part of mainland could receive a dousing as well, though the eastern half of the country should remain dry, according to the latest forecast from the Meteorology and Hydrology Institute.
Winds on the islands are expected to be noticeable, gusting up to 50 kilometers per hour. Daytime temperatures should remain in the 15 to 19 C zone, dropping to 8 to 13 at night.
Another system moving up from the south on Wednesday is likely to bring rain, with the chance of precipitation pegged at 70 percent. The presence of two opposing pressure systems could spell winds of 50 to 60 kilometers per hour between midnight and dawn. But the gusts should die down during the day, when the mercury is expected to rise to 15 to 18 C. Overnight temperatures should be a mild 9 to 14 C.
The early hours of Thursday are expected to see more patches of rain - again a 70 percent chance – as the low-pressure system strengthens. The showers should decrease in frequency during the day, however. Temperatures are likely to be in the 16 to 19 C range.
The forecast for Friday to Sunday is still too hard to call at this point, according to the institute. If the wet weather systems that currently appear to be heading this way do in fact turn out to be intense, and actually reach the Baltics, the country could be in for a very wet weekend. But there is also a chance that the drama will be limited to the occasional shower.
On Friday, ERR News will provide a more up-to-date picture of what is in store for the weekend.
