Nation’s First Wildlife Overpass in Construction
Construction of an animal-friendly overpass or "ecoduct" over a part of the Tallinn-Tartu highway is under way and set to be the first of its kind in Estonia.
Bushes and grass will be planted on the green bridge, and a wooden fence will act as a sound and light barrier from passing vehicles, ETV reported on Sunday.
“This is the most effective solution for animals. It allows nearly all species of animals to cross the road with ease,” said Lauri Klein, an adviser to the Environmental Information Center and one of the architects of the project. He added that other structures, such as tunnels, are more species-specific, but ecoducts are more widely used.
The bridge is being built near Kose, about 30 kilometers from Tallinn. Ecoducts in other locations are also being planned.
