Just hours after the e-voting opened for Estonia's 2013 municipal elections, President Toomas Hendrik Ilves cast his vote online.

An outspoken advocate of e-services and Internet freedom, and the head of the European Union's cloud computing committee, Ilves was at the time of voting being visited in his Kadriorg residence by the French IT minister, Fleur Pellerin. He introduced her to how Estonia's e-voting system works and discussed its security aspects.

Ilves took his pick from the candidates running in Abja, the small rural municipality in southern Estonia where his country house is situated.

Observers may speculate as to whether Ilves purposefully included the berries in the photo tableau. They call to mind Ilves's Independence Day speech from earlier this year in which he said: "Estonia is like a wild strawberry: pristine and small, difficult to find and those who do not know how to, fail to recognize and value it."
