MEP and Former Reform Party minister Kristiina Ojuland and her allies decided to name their new political party Rahva Ühtsuse Erakond, or Party of People’s Unity. MEP and Former Reform Party minister Kristiina Ojuland and her allies decided to name their new political party Rahva Ühtsuse Erakond or Party of People’s Unity.

The founders initially picked the name Ühtne Eesti (United Estonia), but the alternative theater NO99 had previously produced a performance with the same title and was highly critical of the plan, uudised.err.ee reported today.

The party then announced it will drop the controversial name but keep the word “unity”.

Commenting on the new name this morning, Ojuland said the politicians in power in Estonia see a divide between themselves and the people.

“However, in a democratic state, the highest power must lie with the people. The people are not an abstract term, it’s people gathered around united goals,” she said.

She added the unity of people is the key to all political changes badly needed in Estonia at the moment. “That was the deciding factor in choosing the name for a new political force,” the nascent party said in a press release.

The founding members have formed eight working groups to put together the party’s positions. The program should be ready within a month and a half, the party said.

The Party of People’s Unity goal is to run in the next parliamentary elections.
