German Chancellor Angela Merkel said that although there is currently little chance of a military conflict between Russia and the Baltic states, NATO would provide military help in case war broke out.

She told Die Welt that despite calls by former German leaders Gerhard Schröder, Helmut Kohl and Helmut Schmidt to soften the stance against Russia, Europe's actions are justified by the events in Ukraine.

Merkel said it was "a fact" that Russia violated the territorial integrity and independence of Ukraine and Russia's actions must have consequences. She also criticized Russia's activities in Moldova, Georgia and the Western Balkans.

NATO will continue air policing missions of the Baltics, move forward with the creation of a very high readiness task force and closer military cooperation with Denmark and Poland.
