Social Democrat Chairman Sven Mikser said current PM Andrus Ansip is likely to take Estonia's EU Commissioner spot during the second half of the the year.

“The EU Commissioner topic has not been discussed at the (coalition) negotiations, but I believe that it is highly likely the next European Commission member will be the outgoing prime minister,” Mikser told Postimees on Friday.

Ansip has stated his interest in succeeding Siim Kallas, who is set to step down after the current Commission's term ends.

The topic of the next Estonian Commissioner could have been one of the nails in the previous coalition's coffin. Coalition members IRL and the Reform Party had been at odds over the next Estonian member, with IRL saying that they should pick the next candidate, as Kallas, a Reform Party founder, held the post the previous 10 years.

The two parties had initially agreed on IRL's Mart Laar succeeding Kallas, but due to health reasons and other commitments, Laar was no longer a serious candidate.

The Social Democrats are at the end of coalition talks with the Reform Party and could form the next government later this week.
