Former Education Minister Jevgeni Ossinovski, who last week announced his plan to stand for the Social Democrats leader, published his program today, in which he clearly indicates that under his leadership, the party would demand a new coalition agreement from the partners – the Reform Party and IRL.

Ossinovski said in the foreword of his vision that in order to fulfill the aims of the Social Democrats, the party must participate in the coalition government, but they cannot compromise on most important principles, Estonian daily Eesti Päevaleht wrote.

Ossinovski proposed three main ideas for which his party should stand for. First is the tax reform – people on average income should pay less tax, while the taxes should be raised on assets.

Second, he recommended to curb the campaign costs for elections and third, make the investments into education an utmost priority. Ossinovski pointed out that the current government has not allocated additional funding for education.

Ossinovski confirmed last week that he will challenge current Social Democrats leader Sven Mikser in an election on May 30 for head of the party.

"It's not so much about whether we are in the government or not, but how to give the party back its confidence," he said when announcing his decision. "We're not in politics to be popular or secure jobs for our members, but to find solutions to strategic questions the country is faced with, to make sure that Estonia and its society develop, and that it's a good place to live in - not just for one election cycle, but in twenty, fifty and one hundred years down the line."

Mikser announced over the weekend that he will stand again and defend his position as the leader of the Social Democrats.
