Thousands of people turned out to protest against the Russia's role in Ukraine and against President Vladimir Putin in Moscow on Sunday.

Neeme Raud, ERR's correspondent in Moscow, said the march was the first since March sanctioned by authorities.

Olga, a protester, told Raud that the march is unlikely to change things, but it is better than nothing, adding that the state is trying to block off online access, and human rights are violated at every step.

Another protester said Russia and Putin have different paths, while another said even under former leader Joseph Stalin people owned up to their crimes.

A protest by extreme nationalists also took place in Moscow on Sunday, with police out in force to keep the two groups apart, Raud said.

According to the latest polls, Putin has the backing of between 84 and 86 percent of the nation.
