Reserve Lieutenant Colonel Leo Kunnas says there is currently no point in introducing conscription for females out of a desire to emulate Norway.

"In Estonia's situation, I don't see a point. I'm not absolutely against it, but the main problem is that we need to increase our defense forces for wartime and we have to accept psychologically and physically healthy men into compulsory military service so that they can get their wartime positions in the wartime Defense Forces," said Kunnas on uudised.err.ee.

"Once this has been done and if society has a sincere desire and pressure, why not. But right now I don't see a need."

Kunas said the Estonian wartime Defense Forces should be 50,000-55,000. "To maintain and keep such an army at strength we don't need conscription for women."

Kunnas said he encouraged women to volunteer to go through military service.

He also said that before defense districts were abolished as a part of the military's structure, the size of the wartime defense forces was 42,000 men; now it is just half that.
