Addressing signals that the government is on the verge of collapsing, IRL Chair Urmas Reinsalu has said leaving the ruling coalition would be the wrong move, while calling together his party leadership next week to discuss recent political turmoil.

Last night, former IRL head Mart Laar, who is leaving Parliament to take up a position with the central bank on Wednesday, said in a letter that the party should consider leaving the ruling coalition.

But the party's current head, who is also the defense minister, did not show support for such a decision. "The issue is how to prevent political scandals from affecting the work of the government. Parties must be able to resolve their messes on their own,” Reinsalu said in a press release.

"I do not see any use in posing a political choice for IRL to discuss leaving the government. Slamming doors in the government may bring momentary popularity, but it would not be responsible,” Reinsalu said.

"Calling forth a shift to the left on our own initiative could challenge many of the values that we have achieved and which we have stood for,” Reinsalu said.

Laar's letter

A veteran politician and former prime minister, Laar said late spring had brought a succession of "soap operas" in the Reform Party.

Laar wrote: "The governing coalition has managed not only to make itself a laughingstock, but all of Estonian politics has been made untrustworthy. The internal party elections are not national e-elections to be sure, but trust in the latter are diminished by lack of honesty in internal elections."
