The cabinet has approved the Violence Prevention Strategy for 2015-2020, with the focus on changing the public's attitude to violence, advancing victim support services and reducing the number of homicides.

In 2013, 52 people died as a result of violent crime. One of the aims of the strategy is to cut that number in half by 2020, the Ministry of Justice has announced.

The prevention work will focus on five key areas: violence against children, child abuse, domestic violence, sexual violence and human trafficking.

The ministry will apply four blocks of measures or strategies to reduce violence in the society. The first block aims to raise public awareness and change the attitudes toward the use of violence. In the core of the second strategy is the victim-centered approach and ensuring their safety and necessary support services. The third aims to improve the cooperation between different agencies involved in the investigation of violent crimes, and the forth concentrates on changing the attitudes and behavior patterns of the perpetrators.

The strategy also foresees further training of social, education and law enforcement specialists, and the advancement of the victim support system.

The strategy was drafted with the help of education, social work, medical and legal experts from different state agencies, local governments and NGOs.
