TV presenter Tanel Talve and former development fund head Ott Pärna have launched a project to share and collect thoughts on how to reform Estonian politics, economy and society, saying Estonia's development has ground to a halt, and changes are needed.

The pair, who will run for the Social Democrats at the national elections in March, but who have not joined the party, have assembled a group of public figures who have signed on to the initiative.

Former government minister Raivo Vare, one of the 18 opinion leaders to sign up, said that Estonia has come full circle in 20 years and many areas need change. He said Estonia needs to think where it wants to go and needs to establish new challenges.

“The whole idea of [the website] riigireform.ee is to unite this type of thinking. There are a host of similar ideas, some have made it to political parties' election platforms, but they are fragmented. The logic behind riigireform.ee is different – it is one of a holistic picture." Vare said.

The initiative calls for an agreement on future goals, a policy on development which encompasses all fields and for the reorganization of the state apparatus to increase capability.

The constant throughout the initiative is that the road which brought Estonia to where it is now, will no longer take the nation forward in future, and wide-spread reforms in many walks of life are needed.

The website lists questions and problems which need to be addressed, and even offers a few ideas. Organizers ask for thoughts to be sent by email and promised to give an overview of the drive and structure ideas into specific reforms soon.
