According to latest statistics, the emigration from the country slowed down last year and decreased by 30 percent.

4,637 persons emigrated and 3,904 people immigrated to Estonia in 2014, the Statistics Estonia reported today. The volume of emigration was 30 percent smaller than in the previous three years.

53 percent of the emigrants and 44 percent of the immigrants were females, while the net migration of males was positive – 14 more men came to live in Estonia than moved abroad.

In all age groups, the number of emigrants in 2014 was smaller than in the previous years.

The majority of people who emigrate are aged 20–34 and the immigrants are mainly aged 25–39. Net migration was positive (more people taking up residence in Estonia than leaving) in two age groups: among children aged 0–4 and persons aged over 60. Population loss was the greatest among 5–14-year-olds and 20–29-year-olds, and was also negative in 35–59 age group.

Estonians mostly emigrate to Finland – officially over 3,000 last year. Meanwhile, almost 1,300 people immigrated to Estonia from Finland. Germany and Sweden are also popular destination countries. Net migration is positive with Russia, Ukraine and the United States.

Statistics also shows that many Estonians who have left in previous years, do return – 65 percent of the 'immigrants' were citizens of Estonia, while 11 percent were Russian citizens. But among the emigrants, a whopping 93 percent are Estonian citizens.

80 percent of the immigrants to Estonia take up residence in the capital Tallinn. A smaller number move to Ida-Viru, Tartu and Pärnu counties.

It is estimated that approximately up to 150,000 Estonians live abroad. Finland has the greatest number of Estonian émigrés - almost 50,000.
