Lavly Perling began her term as head prosecutor today, saying the Prosecutor's Office needs structural reforms.

She said the institution needs modernization to be able to support law enforcement agencies.

“I believe the prosecution must become more efficient, smarter and more open, and that in both cases with high national priority and at a regional level,” she told ETV on Thursday.

In smaller settlements local police and prosecutors must cooperate to tackle problems affecting local life. She said her priorities will be children, and economic and organized crimes.

Perling was the only candidate for the top job, with a few MPs voicing their disappointment that more legal experts were not interested.

She has been with the Prosecutor's Office since 1996, having led a number of high-level cases, including against Herman Simm, convicted of spying for Russia.
