Births Outpacing Deaths This Summer (5)
July saw the number of births in the country hit a 12-month high, and was also the second month in a row in which births outstripped deaths - a blip of cheery news against a troubled backdrop.
A total of 1,300 live births and 1,278 deaths were registered in July, Statistics Estonia said.
The figures for June were 1,096 and 1,061.
The number of births in 2013 so far, however, is lower than the number of deaths. Through the seven months of the year, there have been 8,133 births and 9,350 deaths registered.
The respective figures for 2012 were 8,220 births and 9,191 deaths, a less dramatic change.
The net population change was positive in 2011 for the first time in the last 20 years, but deaths once again outpaced births in 2012.
According to the 2011 census, Estonia was home to 1.29 million people. The population had dropped 5.5 percent in the eleven years since the previous census was taken.
