The Ministry of Social Affairs has prepared a bill to set up a gender equality council under its jurisdiction, a week after Parliament rejected an idea to create a parliamentary commission on gender equality.

The 22-member council would be responsible for confirming the general direction of gender equality policies in Estonia, advising the government on gender equality strategies and making sure that the Gender Equality Act is enforced, uudised.err.ee reported today.

The ministry named political scientist and presidential adviser Iivi Anna Masso as a potential head of the council.

Notable names among the ministry's list of possible council members are Volli Kalm, the rector of the University of Tartu, trade unions' chief Peep Peterson, Social Democratic Party head Sven Mikser, former education minister and current Center Party MP Mailis Reps and Gender Equality Commissioner Mari-Liis Sepper.
