Hiiumaa Temporarily Cut Off by Low Water Level
Low water levels in the straits are hampering ferry traffic today.
The first ships to and from Hiiumaa Island at 6:30 were not able to leave port.
The morning departures on the Hiiumaa-Saaremaa line were also canceled, but ferry traffic between the mainland and Saaremaa Island is going ahead, operator Väinamere Liinid announced.
At 6:00 water levels were as follows: Rohuküla -78cm, Heltermaa -73cm, Triigi -82cm, Kuivastu -76cm, Virtsu -84cm.
Ice roads to Hiiumaa are not yet open. The only of the nation's six ice roads that has thus far been opened is the one from near Haapsalu to the Noarootsi peninsula. It was announced over the weekend that the Saaremaa-mainland ice road would not open this year.
While a number of factors have lowered local sea levels, uudised.err.ee says that near the mouth of the Kunda River on the northeast coast, residents are experiencing flooding due to an ice jam and disruption in flow due to local industry.
