Galojan Gets a Fortnight's Deferral
Former socialite and convicted embezzler Anna-Maria Galojan has won some time and potential freedom following her capture in London, although her case appears to not to be registering as a cause celebre in Britain.
Galojan, who fled her prison sentence in Estonia hinting that Britain could take her in as a refugee, appeared before a court where bail was set. She is due to appear again before the court on February 28.
While front-page news in Estonia, with her latest escapades followed eagerly by a public with little tolerance for unrepentant spendthrifts, her adventures are naturally on a decidedly smaller-time footing in Britain, where her case was heard at a Magistrate's Court and, according to Postimees, her bail was set at 2,000 pounds sterling.
She has a week to post the bond.
Measures have been taken this time to prevent her from absconding again: her passport and ID card have been surrendered to the police.
