An informal poll conducted by ERR turned up broad support for the launch of a Russian-language broadcasting channel, approved by the government recently and set to be launched a year from now.

Only one of 10 interviewees polled on the street was skeptical, saying in essence that it was "too little too late" and that he was loyal to Russian Federation channels with their "more interesting, informative content."

The responses from the other nine subjects, who were not asked to identify themselves:

"A good idea, it is for Russians, after all. I would want positivism and entertainment from the programming. Life is tough as it is." (female)

"Of course I'll watch it. I'd be interested in people's life in Narva and Tallinn." (male)

"Why should TV be only in Estonian. Russians want to watch, too." (female)

"Unvelievable! But what channel and what can be seen there?" (female)

"I'd like Estonian news to keep up to date with what's going on in the country. The ETV evening news program is not enough."

"I'd like educational programs like on the Discovery channel and also political debates, to see how debating is done in Estonia." (younger male)

"Let's see how it will turn out. To this point, the Estonian media has only attacked Russia, but someone should also defend Russia on the Russian-language channel." (older male)

"Less politics. More cultural news and historical programs. The state of our historical memory is poor." (older male)

"Russians should be on board for the production on the Russian channel, not just Estonians." (younger male)

The timeframe is that the new station will go on line in September 2015. But already in January 2015, there will be a longer program for the Russian-language version of the evening news and more Raadio 4 programming.
