Urmas Viilma, who was elected to lead the Estonian Evangelical Lutheran Church at the end of November, has taken over from the interim archbishop, Einar Soone.

Viilma, 41, was elected to replace Andres Põder, who turned 65 last November, and was thus no longer eligible to lead the church, according to the church's laws.

Munib Younan, the head of the Lutheran World Federation, was present at today's ceremony in Tallinn, as were a number of regional Lutheran church heads.

Viilma was the Chancellor of the church's consistory until now, having studied at the Institute of Theology, the Lutheran church's own higher education institute. He was ordained in 1993.
