The culturally distinct region of Mulgimaa, located south of Viljandi, inaugurated a new flag on Saturday.

The design features the black color as a symbol of traditional coats, a flax-blue, white to symbolize light and a red lucet cord, ETV reported.

“The Mulgi flag is important. Until now the Mulgi people have been without one. But it will unite Mulgimaa, all Mulgi municipalities and homes may hoist the flag,” Kristi Ilves, a local guide and journalist said.

The design was picked out from 60 entries in April.

Speaking at the inauguration, President Toomas Hendrik Ilves, a Mulk, said that local municipalities in Mulgimaa should merge into one.

Another ethnographic area of Estonia, Vana-Võromaa, held its own flag contest in mid-February.
