This year's Farmer of the Year, dairy and grain farmer Ilmar Teevet, said success is based on valuing staff and livestock.

Head of a 5,500 hectare, 2,400 animal farm in the Vändra municipality, halfway between Pärnu and Türi, Teevet said the Russian sanctions have hit his company hard, and they are selling goods below cost price. He said, however, it is not the end of the world - better periods will return.

Staff at the farm say Teevet is hard-working and caring, but also smart, having pushed through investments at the right time.

“We have the possibility to visit a health care center, milkmaids receive massages, [there are] Christmas bonuses, Midsummer Day bonuses. He does not forget his employees. It is very important for people to know they are appreciated,” Ene Vaakmann, head of breeding at the farm, said.

The “Farmer of the Year” title was handed out for the 14th time, but was a first for Pärnu County. The title is decided by the Estonian Chamber of Agriculture and Commerce and the weekly Maaleht.
