NGO Network Hands Out Annual Civic Awards
The Network of Estonian Nonprofit Organizations has given its award for good deed of the year to the Kalev/Cramo basketball team for helping an elderly woman stack firewood.
Teresa Mäeveer, 84, of Tallinn ordered firewood which the city distributed for free to seniors. But what was delivered was not split kindling but thick lengths of roundwood, much of it soaked. As the officials only offered to take it away again, the team came to her assistance.
The "man/woman with a mission" title went to film director Jaan Tootsen, who produced a film about the Uus Maailm community group, five years in the making.
ERR received a best civil society prize, for its online election sites.
The Association also mentioned the Civic Press Society's village news site, Eesti Energia's youth program, the non-profit association Kodaniku Hääl (Citizen's Voice) and the Pühajärve community.
