Estonian Women Have High Profile in Brussels Halls of Power
Estonians working for the European Commission make up 0.9 percent of the institution's staff, three times higher than the nation's slice in the EU's population.
Of the 202 Estonians at the Commission, 159 are women, making up 1.3 percent of all female employees, reported Postimees.
Most work for the administration side of the Commission, which has 16 grades. No Estonian has reached the highest level, AD16, but two Estonians, Henrik Hololei, who is Head of Cabinet for Siim Kallas and the director for trade strategy, analysis and market access, Signe Ratso are at AD15.
A total of 23,600 people work for the European Commission, with around 1,000 more women than men.
The Estonian population in Brussels numbers approximately 2,000, about the same population as the winter capital of the nation, Otepää. Besides the Commission, many work for Estonia's representations to the EU and NATO.
