Recently released data from the 2011 census shows that the number of people who commute from the capital to adjacent municipalities for work is 35,000, nearly 10 percent of the city's workforce.

The most popular destination is Rae municipality, which employes 3,500 Tallinn residents. The municipality acts as a logistics hub, offering cheaper land for factories, Statistics Estonia said on its blog today.

Nearby towns also attract the capital's laborers. These include Maardu, which pulls in 2,400 workers from Tallinn, Saue (500) and Keila (450).

Traffic in the other direction, however, is more than twice as intense, with a 79,000-strong workforce commuting into Tallinn on a daily basis.
