Tallinn mega-hospital confirmed but will take 10 years to build
The idea to construct a large hospital complex in Lasnamäe has been around since the 1980s, but the city has now set up a committee to finally begin the process.
A broad-based working group will first create a vision, and then draw up of a functional development plan, Deputy Mayor Merike Martinson, who will lead the committee, said. "After that we plan to involve top leaders from the field and foreign experts,” she added.
She said many factors have to be added to the equation, such as the demographic prognosis, health and illness figures, as well as health trends.
The hospital is likely to have around 700 beds, and include facilities such as a modern rehabilitation center.
Once complete, the hospital should be Estonia's biggest, and would only be rivaled by the University Hospital complex in Tartu.
Martinson told Postimees the hospital is unlikely to open before 10 years time, adding that there is currently no point in speculating about costs.
