The southern Estonian region of Mulgimaa is holding a vote to decide which of five flag designs will become the official colors of the ethnographically unique area.

Residents of the region can vote for one of the five finalist designs, which were picked from 61 entries in the first round of the competition, ETV reported on Sunday.

“We have 11 rural municipalities and all had very different views. The five designs were chosen as a compromise after each municipality picked five of their favorites. Of those, we made a list of the most popular flags,” said Janne Järvelt, head of the Mulgi Cultural Institute.

The five patterns have similarities, for example, the black color that is symbolic of Mulgi coats, the type often worn by President Toomas Hendrik Ilves, and also symbolizes fertile land. The red lucet cord, seen on all five designs, expresses vitality and beauty.

Votes can be sent in via email or snail post until the April 15 deadline.

Another ethnographic area of Estonia, Vana-Võromaa, held its own flag contest in mid-February.
