Haapsalu to Host Nation's Victory Day Parade
A proposal by President Toomas Hendrik Ilves to hold this year's Victory Day Parade in Haapsalu has been approved by the Defense Forces.
The June 23 parade, which moves from city to city each year, was last held in Haapsalu in 2000. The parade will take place on a site next to Haapsalu's railways station, Postimees reported today.
According to the daily, the parade will be on a smaller scale than that of last year when 1,500 soldiers marched through Pärnu.
Victory Day marks the victory of the Estonian Army over the German Landeswehr on June 23, 1919 in what was a crucial moment in the nation's war for independence.
In the three years before Pärnu played host to the event, the parades were held in Jõgeva, Viljandi and Tartu.
