On the same day that Estonian troops head to Africa, the last infantry company serving in Afghanistan's notorious Helmand province packs its bags.

The last unit lowered the Estonian flag this morning and held a ceremony attended by Estonian Defense Minister Sven Mikser, head of the Estonian Defense Forces Riho Terras and the British ambassador to Estonia, ERR radio reported.

The first Estonian troops arrived in 2005, with a combat unit following in 2007.

The troops now begin their journey back to Ämari airbase later today. A few Defense Force members will stay on as part of training missions.

Eight Estonian soldiers lost their lives in combat and one as a result of an accident in Afghanistan. 92 soldiers were wounded.
