Ministries launch a campaign against domestic and sexual violence
The Ministry of Justice, the Ministry of Social Affairs and the Police and Border Guard Board (PPA) launched a public awareness campaign "Open Your Eyes" on Tuesday.
The campaign aims to raise awareness of violence directed against women, and teach people, especially the youth, to notice the signs and ask for professional help.
24-hour helpline number 1492 will give advice in Estonian and Russian to all women, who have experienced physical, psychological, economic or sexual violence.
It will not only offer psychological advice, but will also provide information on where the nearest help centers are located.
"The helpline also gives advice on how to fill in the official forms when contacting relevant state bodies, how to communicate with the police, how to communicate with the lawyers, and how to file for a divorce - so they help with all the stages that require legal knowledge that the women themselves may not necessarily possess," the campaign initatior, Sass Henno, said.
"Breaking up is emotionally difficult. The centers will also offer advice on how to plan an exit from an abusive relationship, if one cannot find the strength to walk out overnight; on how to start building up personal independence step by step," he added.
Practical advice on how to protect oneself from an abusive relationship, where to turn to and how to get help, and also how to offer it, is also available at avasilmad.ee website.
