Crime Briefs: Silk Road Anonymity Foiled at Post Office, Juvenile Fugitive Stabs Officer
Harju County Court sentenced a man to probation for ordering controlled substances, including ecstasy and marijuana, in an encrypted transaction using the SilkRoad website and Bitcoin currency.
The man drew a suspended sentence and three years of probation for possession and unauthorised ordering of narcotics from abroad. Fines and costs amounted to just over 1,000 euros.
The man was caught when customs workers intercepted the majority of the illegal parcels, said uudised.err.ee. The man had ordered a total of one gram of MDMA and 50 grams of cannabis.
The Tax and Customs Board's drug enforcement director Urmet Tambre said he believed customs officials were capable of confiscating more than 50 percent of such inbound parcels. Tambre also said that his agency had found "countermeasures" to reveal the identity of people related to the drugs-containing parcels, though he did not elaborate.
Late last night, a 16-year-old accused of burglaries who had fled a Tallinn courtroom earlier in the day used a knife to stab a policeman in the back and legs.
In the incident outside the boy's mother's Õismäe apartment around 21:00, the policeman discharged several shots from his service firearm into the suspect's legs.
Neither individual's injures are serious, and the suspect was able to flee on foot despite gunshot wounds to both legs.
He was apprehended at midnight without incident at Tallinn bus station.
The boy has a long arrest record, including most recently for car theft.
He fled the court building on Liivalaia street at 12:50 yesterday due to police inattentiveness, a police spokesman said. A disciplinary probe may be launched, although the suspect had in fact originally turned himself in to the police three days before the courtroom incident.
An unknown individual ransacked a latrine in an outdoor recreational site in Tähtvere rural municipality near Tartu, taking a composter from deep within the bowels of the outhouse. Losses are estimated at 600 euros.
