Tartu County Court sentenced a Latvian to six months of jail time for unauthorized theft of money from bank accounts accessed by using card data skimmed from an ATM.

The 29-year-old installed the skimmers, which copy data from bank cards, Eesti Päevaleht reported.

The court also ordered the man to pay 11,500 euros in damages. He will also be expelled at the end of his sentence and have persona non grata status for three years.

He installed the skimmers in Valga, Viljandi and Tartu, while the bank cards fashioned on the basis of the stolen data were used to withdraw cash in Vietnam and Indonesia.

In April, two Bulgarians were convicted of installing a skimmer - they were apprehended the day after, so no money was stolen. They received five months of imprisonment and will be expelled, and persona non grata for five years.
