The Global Gender Gap Report compiled by the World Economic Forum said that Estonia is far behind its Baltic neighbors in gender equality.

According to the recently published report, Estonia is placed 59th out of 136 nations, with Lithuania in the 28th spot and Latvia in 12th.

Estonia was ranked as high as 29th in 2006, but has climbed one place since last year.

The report's aim is to capture the magnitude and scope of gender-based disparities and track their progress. Economic participation, political empowerment, educational attainment and health-based criteria are considered.

Estonia scored relatively high marks for economic aspects (41st) and health (34th) equality, but not as well in political empowerment (88th).

Iceland leads the table for the fifth year running, followed by Finland, Norway, Sweden and the Philippines, while Yemen (136th), followed by Pakistan and Chad bottom out the list.
