Police send thousand Christmas cards to traffic offenders
The Police and Border Guard Board sent out nearly 1,000 cards to people who have five or more traffic violations from 2015, warning them to behave in the future.
Riho Tänak, of the police force, said the aim is to remind people that traffic rules are very important.
“The card has a simple message, that the driver should be more alert in traffic next year, as this helps avoid casualties. Sending cards has become a police tradition in the last five years and feedback is great,” Tänak said, adding that punishment should not be the only form of a reminder about traffic laws.
The 920 people receiving the cards committed a total of 5,721 traffic violations, of which 500 were an invalid license. A further 500 tickets were written for expired roadworthy certificates or expired insurance. Lack of safety equipment was noted on 300 occasions and DUIs 250 times. Around a fourth of all violations were speeding violations.
A 20-year-old man broke traffic rules 19 times, the most of the 920 drivers, while 10 people committed 15 or more violations and 52 people broke rules 10 or more times. Of the 920, 89 people also received a similar warning card a year ago.
