The first of the 20 new trams that Tallinn City Transport bought from the Spanish firm CAF, arrived in Tallinn last night.

The tram was assembled on the tracks and will first undergo a test period, during which it travels 1,000 kilometers in real road conditions. Testing should end in early February.

The last of the 78-seat, low-floor, trams will arrive in the beginning of 2016.

The total cost of the deal, which includes training for drivers and maintenance teams, was 53.4 million euros. It was paid for with money earned from CO2 quota sales.

The reconstruction of tracks took the final cost up to 91 million euros.

The first of the new trams was christened Moonika. People have been asked to suggest names for the remaining 19 vehicles.
