Tallinn's new trams named (3)
Tallinn's public transportation company (TLT) has unveiled all the new names for 19 brand new Spanish-built trams after public competition.
The competition, which asked people to name each of the 19 trams which will soon hit the street, attracted over 1,000 entries. TLT also asked people to send in a story for each particular name, although the most popular names won.
The 19 trams will be named Anna, Annika, Eerika, Elise, Jaanika, Kadri, Karmen, Katariina, Koidula, Lydia, Linda, Maarika, Maria, Paula, Teele, Tiina, Triin and Viivika, besides Moonika, the first tram - all female names. One tram was left unnamed, and will remain without a name until all trams have arrived in Tallinn.
This year the city will take delivery of 16 trams, with four more arriving in 2016.
The total cost of the deal, which includes training for drivers and maintenance teams, was 53.4 million euros. It was paid for with the money earned from CO2 quota sales. The reconstruction of the tracks took the final cost up to 91 million euros.
