Harju County Court today handed down a nine-month jail sentence to a 44-year-old man for driving intoxicated down Harju Hill stairs last November in a failed attempt to shake police pursuers.

The man, Villu Leegen, said he thought he was sober and gave no explanation why he ran from police or why he chose to drive down a popular pedestrian walkway in the middle of the day. Leegen's driver's license was revoked at the time for a drinking and driving offense in 2013.

Police chased Leegen's Land Cruiser down the stairs on foot, with one officer sustaining minor injuries. His car was then blocked by concrete pigeons and police were able to catch him.
