A bomb disposal unit was called out on Friday when a local hunter found five unexploded shells.

The explosives, four of them 76 and one 105 millimeters in diameter, were found in Sooru village, Valga County.

The disposal unit destroyed the shells on the same day.

Last year, the same unit disposed almost 1,300 explosives, mostly remnants of World War II. The largest was a 250-kilogram aircraft bomb, which took three days of preparations before it was destroyed.

Valga County saw fierce battles in September 1944, when the advancing Soviet Red Army was attacking the Nazi German forces, which had occupied Estonia since 1941.
