According to Statistics Estonia, 13,500 children were born last year, 500 fewer than on 2012.

Despite the trend of declining birth rates reversed 10 years ago, climbing to around 16,000 births each year from 2007 to 2010, rates have again began to drop, but experts say that is due to a smaller generation arriving at the birth-giving age.

The number of children per woman has not changed, Statistics Estonia said, adding that the average age of pregnancy has increased due to more opportunities for studies, travel and careers.
