Former First Lady Evelin Ilves said President Toomas Hendrik Ilves's recent engagement new answers many questions asked from her since August 2014, when she was pictured in an intimate embrace with an unidentified younger man at a Tallinn roof-top hotspot.

President Ilves, whose term ends in August 2016, announced his engagement to Latvian official Ieva Kupce a few days ago. Media reports suggest the pair will marry before Ilves steps down in August.

In April this year, it was announced that President Ilves and Evelin Ilves were divorcing. Evelin Ilves has now commented on the engagement to Kupce by saying the move answers many questions.

“I am happy this has been made public as it is the answer to many questions, which I have been asked daily by the media and by acquaintances over the past seven months, but which I have left unanswered. For example, from: 'What took you to that roof?' to ending with: 'Why did you divorce?' I hope these questions end now, as public space is now full of that answer,” she said on social media.

She said, commenting on how President Ilves got engaged only seven month after their divorce, that the only truth is that the heart wants what it wants, and that must be respected.

President Ilves was married to Evelin Ilves (then Int-Lambot) for over 10 years, they have a daughter born in 2003. Ilves has two older children from his first marriage to US psychologist Merry Bullock.

Kupce, 38, has two children, aged 2 and 13. The father of the younger child, an Azerbaijani citizen, is deceased, Postimees reported.
