Last evening, President Toomas Hendrik Ilves visited the Dutch Embassy in Tallinn to sign the book of condolences after the crash of the Malaysian Airlines flight in which 298 died, 193 of the victims being from the Netherlands.

"We small nations always feel tragedies more strongly. Everyone knows someone or knows someone who knows someone. And so the tragedy ripples through a people and everyone feels it," he wrote.

"You can count on Estonia at this time of sorrow, just as you can count on us at other times, as allies, as fellow Europeans, as close friends."

Flight MH17 was shot down on Thursday over wartorn eastern Ukraine while en route from Amsterdam to Kuala Lumpur.
