Kadri Simson, the head of the Center Party's faction in Parliament, said preparing women for wartime is sensible, there are a great number of barriers to enforced conscription for women in Estonia.

“It would be difficult for anyone to stay out of a possible military crisis and thus it would be better is men, as well as women are prepared,” Simson told uudised.err.ee on Thursday.

“God made Man but Samuel Colt made them equal. Both a man and a women can manage to hold a 4-kilogram rifle and a few women are better shots,” she said.

She said currently only a third of men are deemed fit enough to pass conscription training, and Estonia has struggled to arm and house the current number of conscripts and provide them enough instructors.

Norway recently became the first European nation to impose mandatory conscription on women.
