Under a proposed amendment, police will gain the power to escort children who are in danger to a shelter.

Currently only municipal child protection officials can take a child into protective custody.

The change, drafted by the Ministry of the Interior, will be proposed because such municipal officials are not available around the clock.

The draft amendment is a step aimed at offering better protection to children in at-risk families, the Ministry of the Interior said in a release that was published uncut on uudised.err.ee
